Ukraine is little by little recovering from a shock, which was caused by the totalitarian regime of The USSR and its breakdown. In the former Soviet Union there was no such notion as a “Ukraine lady”. There were no ladies, and there hardly were Women. Comrade and citizen was a usual address to a woman, now traditional Ukrainian “pani” (“Ukraine lady”) is getting more and more common.

There was no cult of beauty during the totalitarian regime, now it has appeared and is gaining strength. Fashion used to be something for foreign people, now all fashion houses have their boutiques in every big city of Ukraine. Economics are improving, culture is regenerating, and moral values are still of the prior importance. These and many other reasons created the appearance of a notion “Ukraine lady”. So, Ukraine lady, what is she?

A Ukraine lady is good-looking and stylish. She likes smart clothes and has a good taste. No overdressing, which is so popular with many Ukrainian girls! She manages to be a lady no matter where she goes. A brand-new suit for the office, high-grade jeans and T-shirt for a picnic, a smart dress for a party and no dressing gowns at home! After all, everything has its own dress-code.

Many employers will give you the sack, if you come to the office without a jacket, even in the summer heat. On the other hand, Ukrainian girls dress in short skirts and t-shirts when going to a nightclub, even in the winter frost. Marina, 20 y.o., university student, considers: “It’s not necessary for a Ukraine lady to have much stuff in her wardrobe, though it can’t be
bad, of course. The point is that clothes should be of high quality and go well together.” Ukraine ladies who live in big cities have no problems with buying fashionable clothes, but Ukraine ladies from small town sometimes have to go to the nearest big city (Kiev, Kharkov, Donetsk, Odessa) to do shopping.

A Ukraine lady is well-educated. Education for a Ukraine lady doesn’t mean just a diploma of a university. Education is a deep, profound knowledge in the field in which she works and good comprehensive education. A Ukraine lady is well read and can keep up a conversation, no matter what its topic is: politics or sport, taxes or cooking.

A Ukraine lady takes care of herself. Visiting Ukraine, you can’t but notice, that many Ukraine ladies almost don’t use make-up and still look gorgeous. Natalia, 25 y.o., Geography teacher, says: “Make-up doesn’t make a girl beautiful. It only helps to hide defects. And sometimes, besides defects, it hides the real beauty.” Clear skin and well-groomed hair, rather than make-up, will show you that a Ukraine lady takes much care of herself.

A real Ukraine lady never shows off. She’s clever, but she never boasts of her knowledge, she’s beautiful, but she doesn’t seem imposing because of her beauty. She’s strong, but she has an elegant strength of a lady. A Ukraine lady is a lady, and by her side every man will feel like a gentleman.
